Texturing the body
Assalamualaikum. My name is Widhi Muttaqien.
This is the fourth part of the video tutorial series. In case you stumble upon this video directly be sure to check out the previous videos before moving on. The tutorial series is about developing augmented reality product from A – to – Z using Blender, unity and vuforia. These tutorials are all based on my previous experience developing my own augmented reality product which is this flashcards Arabic letters and numbers augmented reality. Basically a flashcards to help children learning Arabic alphabet using augmented reality. I leave links below in the description if you like to learn more or purchase it from amazon.
We are now moving on to texturing phase of our 3d model. I usually use a Wacom tablet to do texturing. But because I‘m guessing that most of you guys don’t use Wacom tablet right now. So I’ll be using only my mouse also for texturing our model. In this way we can see together that even with just a mouse we can achieve good looking texture. Although if you really want to do professional texturing works I suggest you to get a pressure sensitive tablet such as Wacom, as it will speed up your work considerably. Next thing wee need to do before painting the texture is to add mirror modifier to carny. So we’ll have better visualization of how the texture will look like when carny is in full shape.
To add texture first make sure the object is selected then we can simply change the mode from object mode to texture painting mode by clicking on this pulldown menu in here and choose “texture paint” mode. Immediately your model will look like flat white color like this. In older version of Blender I believe the color is purple. Somehow in blender version 2.78 is now white. Okay now this flat white color in our model indicates that there is something wrong. Notice up here we can see “missing data” warning. This is due to the fact that we haven’t specify any image nor material slot that we want to work with. To fix this issue simply click “add paint slot” and choose diffuse. Diffuse simply means the base color of an object. After you select diffuse slot you’ll see this option about image properties of the texture. For both the width and the height, lets set them to 2048 pixels. This black color is the base color that will flood the image at the first time. So lets change this to green color as most of the color exist in carny will be green. Click on this black box and slide this value up all the way to see some color. Pick green area in here. I’m going to use HSV color mode for this. And just tweak some setting. Ok I think I like this color. You can choose your own color it doesn’t have to be exactly the same with mine. Then turn off alpha as we don’t need any transparency in our image. And that’s it! just leave the rest settings to their default.
As we can see now we can actually paint on carny like this. Just to test that texture painting already work perfectly now. Okay lets undo this and start with the pot first. Make some room for the 3d view. Before doing any painting go to options tab first. Turn off normal in here as it will constraint our brush to only faces facing our direction. Next options is the unified setting. Check all of these option, color and strength. These options will make our brushes share color setting, size and strength.
Okay now go back to tools. Make sure we use the texture-draw brush. Pick brown color and turn the strength all the way up to 1. Then just brush it on the model. If you don’t like the shading in here and want to see the actual color of the texture you can change the viewport shading mode to texture. Also if you want to hide the grids and the axis you can go to 3d view properties and go to display and turn off all of these option. Okay I will speed up the video so you wont get bored.
After we have something like this, we want to add shading color to our pot texture. We want to constraint the painting only to certain faces. We can do this by first clicking this button down here. Then hold shift and right click in here and then several right clicks again until we select all of these faces. Now when we paint, it will only paint inside that selection. Pick a darker color. Make the strength to only 0.2. make the brush bigger, you can use the slider in here to control the brush size or you can also use shortcut F to do this. Brush the bottom part with a bit of darker color. Okay. Now the upper part also, to simulate drop shadow.
Next we want to color the dirt area. Right click and hold shift and right click the other faces. Now lets use another tool for this which is the fill tool. This tool behaves like the paint bucket tool in photoshop. Choose a dirt color. I’m going make it a bit greyish color. And then just color this out like this. Then we’re going to add shadow colors just like before. Choose darker color and use bigger brush but slightly transparent. And then just brush this area. Then this area. Now for the rest of the body, it will be the same process so I will just speed up the video so you don’t get bored and fall a sleep.
Okay we already have the body textured. We now move on to the tooth. Turn on face selection and just select these four faces. Lets select fill brush. Select an off white color and then fill up the entire tooth. Then use texture draw brush again with larger brush size and more transparent yet darker color. Add darker color to the bottom part of the tooth. For the upper part lets add some yellowish color. And that’s it we’re done with the tooth.
Next lets paint the leaf. Make sure face selection is active and select only the leaf faces. For our leaf we’re going to use purple color. So lets find some purple color, I think this will be good. Switch to fill brush and just fill it up with the color. Next we want pick the color of the trunk. We can do this by pressing and holding “S” and release when the mouse is on top of the trunk. As you can see the color change according to the mouse position when we release the “S” key. Now start drawing the main vein. If you are using wacom tablet you can make the end become smaller as you stroke. Because I’m using only my mouse we need to get around this limitation by editing them later. Okay. Now add smaller branching vein. Okay now lets pick the purple color and stroke on the end of the veins to make it smaller. Okay now we can use the smear tool to drag the pixels around so you get this painterly look on leaf texture. Now I’m going to add some shading again using the texture draw brush. But this time I will change the blend from mix to multiply. Mix is the standard blend equal to normal in Photoshop. While multiply blend-mode will darken any pixels below the brush stroke. Suitable for adding shadows like what we’re doing now. Just brush this outer area. And then this middle vein area. We can use the smear tool to tweak the pixels more if you need to.
Okay guys that will enough for this video. We’ll continue adding texture to the head of carny in the next video. A warning for you guys, do not close blender! as your texture are not yet saved to the hard drive. We will cover on how to save image in the next video -in sha Allah-.
