About Widhi Muttaqien
Hi my name is Widhi Muttaqien. I’m an entrepreneur and lecturer in applied computer graphics disciplines.
This is the page where I’m suppose to rant about how great I am right? Ha ha ha. Before we do that a little disclaimer about my photo. If you see this photo at the left (or at the sidebar), well this is me back in the year 2002, looking young and good looking and 30 kg less than my current weight ha ha ha. This photo at the right is how I look like in 2015.
Enough about photo disclaimer.
Allah trusted me with a very beautiful wife which I usually call “bidadari” (heavenly woman) because of her beauty, kindness and support through out my life. Allah also trusted me with 4 beautiful daughters who never stop putting smiles on my face.
Beside sitting in front of computers all day long; I actually like to do sports in my spare time. I play badminton, jog occasionally, I do weight-lifting almost everyday. I also love to play archery and sometime I join air-soft-gun events to pump out some adrenaline. And … I’m also a ninja (Ninjutsu practitioner) but this last one is a secret, so please don’t tell anyone about it.
How do I get here?
Perhaps this is hard to believe but this is the truth. I study and use 3D application way back since 1995. It is an era where not many people now or even heard or even use the term CG (computer graphics). That really shows how old I am huh? At that time I use DOS version of 3D Studio software on my parent’s PC. 3D Studio is the predecessor of 3ds Max. For those of you young generations, DOS (disk operating system) is an operating system that doesn’t have any GUI (graphical user interface). Meaning there is no icons, mouse cursor, moreover touchscreen devices like nowadays. Everything must be type in with keyboards. So, yes, you need to be a geek or nerd to use computers back then.
I remember back then; to render this simple image, my parent’s PC need 15 minutes to complete the render. Can you imagine? Flat image like this, with no lighting, no shading, no texture, obviously no GI. And it took 15 minutes to render! Amazing! Amazingly long and boring result ha ha ha. But my passion to CG is unbearable. Inspired by movies like Star-wars and Jurassic park and also PC and arcade games at that time, I keep learning and digging my self into CG day after day. I bought a lot of books about 3D graphics and game programming. To be honest none of these Indonesian books is high quality. They only cover beginners skin-deep lessons, not in-depth step-by-step lessons that I really need.
In 1997, at that time I was in university studying software development, Allah gave me great opportunity to do internship in a production house company in Jakarta. So I had access at that time to a very fast workstation computers. My employer also was kindly enough to provide me with a book “Inside 3ds Max”. A more than 1300 pages book in English about 3ds Max. Something that shock me the most when reading and learning that book is that all of the skill that I’ve learned before when using 3D Studio (DOS version) became completely obsolete. 3ds Max is a totally different beast than 3D studio. Its like trying and learning how to drive an expensive sport car while all you know was to drive a bicycle. So. There is no other way than to learn everything starting from zero again. For two years I sat in from of computers with that 1300 pages book and a dictionary. Dictionary? Yes off course. I’m Indonesian, my English at that time was very limited so I need a dictionary. For 2 years I keep looking back and forth between PC monitor, the book and the dictionary. In that 2 years also, my once a normal eyes became plus (Hypermetropia) and cylinder (Astigmatic).
Well. Long story short. I use the knowledge I gained from the internship to start teaching in several educational institutes since 2001. Since 2004 I start teaching associate degree in Lasalle College international and start teaching in English. Then in 2006 I start teaching bachelor degree at President University, also in English. It was since 2003 that my English skill become better and better because I have to use it almost every day for the whole day. I have students from Australia, India, Vietnam, Taiwan, Europe etc. Whether I want it or not, there was no other way than to use English. The great thing about teaching is that I get a lot of chances to design curriculums, testing it and keep refining it over time. I keep challenge my self to create better curriculum so that my students can learn CG more effectively and faster; without all of the hassles I’ve gone through before when starting to learn CG.
Until now I have bachelor degree in IT (software development) and master degree in business (management magistrate ) and Information System. I study design (graphic, motion and architecture) mostly autodidact.
What about businesses?
I started expose-3d (expose3d.com) since 2003 with my friend Dwi Prasetyo. He was actually one of my best student in 3D architectural course that I offer him to team up and build a new company for architectural visualization together.
I also started a few other businesses, one of them is Blastocode (blastocode.com) a game development company focusing on educational games for children.
What services do I offer?
Basically I can handle every project related to design and software development such as: 3D graphic, game development, architecture, E-learning, video and animation. But I do cherry-pick about what project I want to work. These are the things that I’m passionate about when doing them.
I may have the skill to do other things but I tend to keep distance from them as I don’t feel any passion when doing them. It really drains energy out of you when you do something outside your passion and it will shows on the final result. And that is always a bad thing.
Do I reject certain projects?
Unfortunately YES! I have no other way but to reject certain criteria of projects that is not suitable to my belief as a Muslim:
- I won’t put photo of woman or man which shows aurat. Aurat are body parts which are prohibited to be seen by public. For woman the aurat is their whole body except the face and the hand. For man the aurat is between the navel and the knee.
- I won’t work with non-sharia financial companies such as: conventional banks, credits, insurances etc.
- I won’t work with haram products. Haram is a term for anything that is prohibited by sharia such as: alcoholic drinks, forbidden drugs, pork products, smokes or cigarettes etc.
- I wont draw or create illustration of creatures that has soul such as: human, animals etc. unless I remove their facial feature.
